The region of Somontano is located in spurs of the Pyrenean mountain range, in the center of the province of Huesca. It is delimited to the east by the Alcanadre river, to the north by the mountain ranges of Guara, Balces and Sevil, to the west by the course of the Cinca river and to the south by the plains that take step to the Monegros. This situation confers to Somontano very special characteristics, of transition between the forms of life characteristic of the mountain and the plain. Also, it articulates the communication between Aragón and Catalonia of a part, and Navarre and Basque Country by another one.
If we entered in Somontano we will find three differentiated zones: the mountain ranges, the Somontano itself and the plains that they are had north successively to the south. In general, all the region presents a barren aspect, even in the mountain, with spontaneous vegetation like the sabina, the holm oak, the boxwood and the aromatic plants.
Today the northern territory of Somontano conforms the Natural Park of the Mountain range and the Canyons of Guara. One is a landscape of canyons and precipices produced by the erosion of the rivers that cross the limestone masses, mainly the rivers Flumen and Vero. This characteristic has caused that is developed an important sport activity in the zone. The rich flora and the fauna are amazing, emphasizing the presence of diverse birds on the way to extinction, like the tawny vulture and the lammergeier.
To the south we found a great plain sprinkled by smooth hills on which some populations are based. In this space the cereal culture predominates with abundant plantations of grapevine, olives and almonds and forests of holm oaks.
In this region we found a series of small very interesting towns, with important examples of cultural patrimony, that articulate surroundings to Barbastro, capital of Somontano. Giving other towns their due, it is necessary to emphasize Rodellar, Asque, Colungo and Alquézar in the mountain ranges and Naval, El Grado, Abiego, Buera, Adahuesca, Berbegal and Pertusa in the plain. In this last one we found Ponzano, close to the state highway N-240 Huesca-Barbastro. Next to an spacious square and a parochial church of Aragonese gothic style, we found small blocks of houses that conserve examples of good popular architecture, with abundance of canopy-form covers and coats of arms made of stone.
